The General Manager, Transmission Service Provider, Transmission Company of Nigeria, TCN, Engr. Ajiboye Oluwagbenga has stated that the transmission capacity of the company has improved in the past few months to 8,500 megawatts.
Ajiboye stated this while speaking with Journalists at the Bi-annual joint Generation, Operations and Distribution planning meeting held recently in Abuja.
The General Manager disclosed unlike the past few years, the company has expanded it capacity to a record high and can now evacuate all the megawatts of electricity generated by the generation companies.
While maintaining that TCN has demonstrated in practical terms through simulations that the company can conveniently wheel 8,500MW, he however noted that "up till now, the power generation that is coming to the grid is always revolving around 4,000MW”.
Earlier, the Managing Director of the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC), Christopher Ezeafulukwe has said that to effectively tackle the challenges in the power sector, stakeholders in the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI) needs work in closed synergy.
Ezeafulukwe who stressed that the power sector in Nigeria would benefit tremendously if stakeholders don't work across purposes added that the partial privatization of the sector has brought some improvements even though more work need to be done to achieve the goal.
According to him, “today is for us to discuss how we can collectively ensure adequate and reliable supply of electricity to our valued customers even in the face of challenges. To overcome the challenges, we all need to work as a team. A team means a group of people who work together towards achieving a common purpose or goal. And our common goal is to ensure that we collectively and sustainably give electricity supply to the customers.
“Incidentally, we are all customers. That is the funny thing about the product that we either produce or we transmit or we distribute. We are not in that kind of business where some people sell things that they don’t use. And so we need to work together as a team”.
While encouraging participants to look at the industry holistically to come up robust solutions to improve services to customers, he assured that AEDC is re-strategising and refocusing on improving electricity supply to its customers”.
