TCN Boss Advocates Use of Scrabble to Tackle English Degradation in Nigeria

Amidst seeming decline in spellings and writing skills, the Managing Director/CEO of Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), Engr. Sule Abdulaziz has said that Scrabble game should be used to tackle English language degradation among young people in Nigeria.

Abdulaziz who stated this when he played host to members of the Nigeria Scrabble Federation (NSF) in his office on Wednesday April 24, 2024, said that given the game's potency for intellectual development, it should be encouraged at all levels.

Represented by the Executive Director, Human Resources and Corporate Services, Mrs. Abiodun Afolabi, the
MD/CEO noted that "while scrabble may not enjoy the same level of popularity in our nation or within TCN like football and others, I firmly believe that it is a game deserving of encouragement, given its capacity for intellectual development.

The MD/CEO however, maintained that "for the game to garner the attention it merits, there is the need to embark on some well-crafted publicity to encourage the love for the game especially within our youths. Many of them do not know how to write well because of the social media. English has been so destroyed so we need to use scrabble to bring it back".

Earlier, President of NSF, Olobatoke Aka said that the aim of their visit was to seek the company's support and also encourage management to institute inter-departmental scrabble competition within the company to encourage staff participation.

While commending TCN for supporting the federation's participation in previous competitions, he said that "scrabble is not too much of a physical sport but brain work. So, it's something that if encouraged, it can be very useful to corporate organisations like TCN. We want to propose the establishment of inter-board scrabble competition to encourage staff to participate in the game".

Aka emphasized that Nigeria was rated as one of the best in the world in the game having won fourteen of the last fifteen international competitions she participated as well as boasting of fifteen of the top twenty rated scrabble players in the world.

He called on TCN to consider supporting the federation's initiative to start Secondary and University Scrabble competitions to encourage Nigerians to embrace the sport.

On his part, the Secretary of TCN sports committee and Assistant General Manager, Administration, Mani Liman said that the company has a rich history in sports and will ensure that he works closely with the Technical Officer of the NSF who is also a staff of TCN to promote the game to staff.
