Power Supply: Benin Republic Electricity Company Meets TCN

The Benin Electricity Production Company (SBPE), met with the management of the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), on Monday April 23,2024 to tackle pressing issues affecting power supply in Benin Republic.

The meeting which was held at TCN's headquarters in Abuja and chaired by the Executive Director TSP, Engr. Mathew Ajiboye, had in attendance the DG SBPE Mr. Tokoudagba Emeric, accompanied by his team, along with the MD/CEO of Transcorp Power, Mr. Christopher Ezeafulukwe.

In his opening remarks, Mr. Ezeafullukwe, highlighted the significance of the meeting amidst the recent transition in Benin's energy sector, leading to SBPE taking over importation duties from the Beninese Electric Power Company (SBEE).

He further explained that Transcorp Power, having maintained a robust relationship with Benin Republic for over four years with TCN's support, has found itself addressing heightened scrutiny from international counterparts due to the recent challenges in the power sector.

According to him, a recent letter expressing concerns over contractual obligations spurred swift action, resulting in the meeting to resolve challenges and strengthen partnerships in the face of evolving circumstances.

On his his part, Mr. Tokoudagba Emeric, SBPE boss, echoed the urgency mandated by their government to address importation issues causing severe challenges in accessing electricity from Nigeria.

While explaining further that the power dynamics between the two countries have shifted since Nigeria's power sector privatization in 2013, he averred that despite contractual agreements with Transcorp Power, Benin Republic often faces prolonged periods without electricity, disrupting daily life and hampering their ability to manage the system effectively.

"In a bid to find solutions, SBPE has come to engage with Nigerian counterparts to forge commitments and ensure a smoother relationship, vital for both nations' energy stability", he said.

In response to concerns raised, Engr. Ajiboye acknowledged the validity  regarding prolonged outages and limitations on the line, and clarified that the characterization of frequent tripping may not be entirely accurate.

He however, highlighted that discussions about addressing occasional tripping were initiated approximately three months ago, with insulator issues identified as the root cause and TCN has secured the necessary insulators, with funding allocated for their replacement.

He reiterated TCN's dedication to fostering a smooth relationship between the two countries in terms of power supply, providing further assurance to the SBPE team.

The Executive Director Independent System Operator, Engr. Nafisa Ali, GM Market Operator, Engr. Edmund Eje were present as part of TCN management team during the meeting.
