TCN Commissions 75MVA Power Transformer At Oji River Sub-Station



The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) commissioned a 75MVA 132/66/32 KV power transformer at the Oji River Substation on the 23rd of May 2024. This commissioning which was performed by a team of TCN engineers from TCN headquarters and the PMU in Abuja led by Engr. Inuwa Dalhatu, marks a significant milestone in enhancing the national grid.

Engr. Ifeanyi Okonkwo, Assistant General Manager of Transmission for the Onitsha Sub Region, provided insights into the project. Initiated in 2020, the project, he said, is a reinforcement and rehabilitation effort funded by the World Bank.

Prior to this commissioning, the substation’s transformer capacity was 90MVA and with the addition of the new 75MVA transformer, the substation capacity has increased to 165MVA, significantly bolstering bulk power supply in the Oji River axis.


Engr. Okonkwo highlighted the anticipated improvements in power supply to Enugu, Anambra, parts of Abia State, and the Oji River area. He assured that the project faced no issues during construction and energization. 

He extended his gratitude to the Project Monitoring Unit of TCN, Abuja, and especially to the MD/CEO of TCN, Engr. Dr. Sule A. Abdulaziz, for his unwavering support in realizing this project.
Following Engr. Okonkwo, Engr. 

Inuwa Dalhatu expressed his gratitude to the MD/CEO of TCN and acknowledged the hard work of the management team in achieving this milestone. Also, Engr. Dr.. Vincent A. Chukwu, AGM (JICA-PIU) and former project coordinator for World Bank PMU Substations, emphasized the strategic importance of upgrading the Oji River Substation following a system planning scoping that justified the installation of the new transformer.

Engr. Abbas Garba, AGM (PC&M), provided a detailed explanation of the new control room at the Oji River Substation noted that the energized transformer will increase TCN's wheeling capacity to the Distribution Companies, thus improving revenue collection.



The commissioning ceremony was attended by key officials, including GM (Transmission) Enugu Region, Engr. Emmanuel Akpa (represented by AGM (TS) Engr. Ada Okafor), AGM (Transmission) Onitsha Sub Region, Engr. Ifeanyi Okonkwo, and his team, and Engr. Uche Azorobodo, Regional Operation Coordinator, representing the Regional Operation Manager, Engr. Akinuli Abimbola Anthony, among others.

The 75MVA 132/33KV power transformer was successfully energized at exactly 12:00 PM on Thursday, 23rd May 2024, marking a significant enhancement in the region’s power infrastructure.
