Engr. Bashir Mohammed Gote, the General Manager, Kano Region of the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), recently welcomed a delegation from NIGELEC, the electric power generation and transmission utility agency of Niger Republic, to his office. The visit was to explore avenues for strengthening the long-standing cooperation between the two power transmission companies.
During the meeting, Engr. Bashir Mohammed Gote expressed his appreciation for the sustained mutual collaboration between TCN and NIGELEC. He reaffirmed TCN's dedication to serving NIGELEC more effectively.
He said plans were ogoing to allocate a dedicated 150MVA 330kV/132kV power transformer to supply the 132kV Kano - Katsina - Gazaoua line (3KBT- KTN - GAZ1 line), capable of accommodating up to 120MW in order to properly serve NIGELEC's needs. Additionally, he revealed that a new 300MVA power transformer is already being conveyed to Kano for installation.
Engr. G C Rwang the PM Communication noted that his team has taken inventory of all communication facilities and gadgets require at Katsina and necessary replacements being carried out as they await the arrival of the transformer.
Engr. Gbadamosi Yusuf, the Regional Operations Manager (ROM) for Kano, appealed to NIGELEC to adhere to their allocated power with due consideration to voltage fluctuations and grid system security. He emphasized that voltage fluctuation causes system insecurity, affecting both Kano and NIGELEC. NIGELEC was equally urged to promptly report any voltage imbalances to Kano regional office.
The Director of NIGELEC, Riba Gado, also advocated for a continued collaboration of the two organizations. He raised concerns about poor cross-border communication between TCN, and NIGELEC since the fire incident at the Birnin Kebbi Transmission Substation and expressed optimism that with the arrival of the new 300MVA 330/132/33kV power transformer to Kano, the issue of load shedding would reduce.
On power allocation to NIGELEC, the ROM confirmed that NIGELEC's current allocation is still 40MW. He assured NIGELEC of consistent supply with good voltage. noting that there is load limitation as only a single 330kV line from Kaduna is used for power supply.
Contracts have however been been awarded for the construction of Mando - Rimin Zakara - Rimin Zakara - Kumbotso -Rimin Zakara – Katsina 330kV Double Circuit lines for flexibility and load increase.
