In a bid to boost the wheeling capacity of the substation, the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has commissioned a 125MVA power transformer at its Umuahia sub-station on July 18, 2024.
Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, the Assistant General Manager, Transformers and Reactors from TCN CHQ, Engr. Ismail Inuwa Dalhatu said that "it is a good news for both TCN and the people of Umuahia and Abia state because this has increased the capacity of the substation. I am sure it will go a long way in improving the power supply to Umuahia and its environs.”
In his speech, Engr. Emmanuel Akpa, the General Manager, (Transmission), Port Harcourt Region who expressed his excitement over the project said that there are similar projects at different levels of completion in different sub stations within the Region.
He maintained that "as we have a 125MVA transformer here, in Alaoji we have a similar 100MVA transformer installation being handled by AKAY. In Aba town, we have another installation, in Port Harcourt Mains, we have a 60 MVA, in Port Harcourt Town, we have 100MVA and a whole lot of expansion and rehabilitation projects ongoing. In Itu, we have similar projects going on and also in Calabar. Port Harcourt Region really has a handful of expansion and rehabilitation projects going on".
On his part, the Regional Operations Manager, Engr. Mike Nwagu while reiterating the benefit of the enhanced capacity, he averred that “the substation's capacity has been enhanced by additional 125MVA. It is coming with additional feeders, which means we can radiate supply even to other areas that have not been supplied before. So when you add the existing feeders to these new ones, about five of them, you can see that it is a huge project and the impact is tremendous.”
Also speaking, Engr. Humphrey Ubaekwena, the Assistant General Manager Transmission overseeing Umuahia substation and all other substations under Aba Sub Region, said that areas to benefit from the project include Umuahia, part of Cross River state, Ohaofia and some parts of Imo state.
