The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has added 635MVA transformer capacity to its South-South network at strategic substations in its Port Harcourt Transmission Region, even as it continues to execute other substation projects to further improve transmission reliability.

General Manager Transmission, Port Harcourt Region, Engr. Nasiru Bello

The General Manager, Port Harcourt Region, Engr. Nasiru Bello, disclosed this in an exclusive interview with TCN Transmission News on October 1, 2026, where he highlighted key infrastructure developments, capacity enhancement initiatives, and ongoing projects aimed at addressing transmission constraints in the region.

Engr. Bello explained that the capacity addition represents a significant step forward for the region, enabling the network to wheel more power and improve bulk power delivery to distribution load centres for onward supply to consumers.

The 635MVA capacity comprises one unit 125MVA power transformer at Port Harcourt Town Transmission Substation, two 125MVA transformers at Port Harcourt Main Transmission Substation, one 125MVA transformer at Alaoji Transmission Substation, one 75MVA transformer at Aba Transmission Substation, and one 60MVA transformer at Itu Transmission Substation.

Beyond these additions, TCN is advancing other projects to expand its network. In Calabar Sub-Region, construction is ongoing on the 2x160MVA Ekori and 2x160MVA Obudu Transmission Substations, while the Ogoja Transmission Substation project is about 90 percent complete.

Engr. Bello also said that plans have been finalised for a new transmission substation in Oron, Akwa Ibom State, adding that site mobilisation and project execution would begin shortly.

He further noted that the expansion projects are complemented by routine maintenance and asset rehabilitation across the region, which are essential to improving equipment reliability, minimising avoidable downtime, and reducing technical losses on the network. These efforts, he said, are geared towards the broader TCN mandate of expanding and modernising the nation's transmission network to improve bulk power delivery to distribution load centres across the South-South and the nation in general.
