The Transmission company of Nigeria (TCN) has on November 6th, 2024 energized a 125MVA power transformer at its Port Harcourt Town Transmission Substation, adding 100 megawatts to the station’s 72 megawatts wheeling capacity.
This project is part of the ongoing World Bank nation-wide rehabilitation and reinforcement of 330/132/33Kv Transmission substations aimed at expanding and upgrading the transmission network for improved bulk power supply.
At the commissioning event, the General Manager, Transmission, Port Harcourt region, Engr. Emmanuel Akpa disclosed that apart from the 125MVA being energized at Port Harcourt Town substation, TCN is executing several other projects within the Region.
“At Port Harcourt Mains two transformers are yet to be installed, we have one at Aba town, another 150MVA installation currently going on at Adiabo, and other expansion jobs are going on simultaneously. Contracts for the rehabilitation of transmission lines have been awarded including Afam- Port Harcourt and Adiabo-Itu 132kV lines and the contractors are already sourcing materials.”
The Regional Operations Manager, Port Harcourt Region, Engr. Oliver Abangwu in his speech noted that the newly energized 125MVA transformer would have a positive impact on supply to consumers as “we now have the capacity to wheel out additional 100 megawatts to the Port Harcourt Distribution Company. This means customers can offtake more load from this station and there is no longer transformer limitation.”
Engr. Saleeman Ibrahim, Coordinator Substation projects who was also present to oversee the commissioning of the transformer said that apart from the transformer installation, the project involves the rehabilitation of the Port Harcourt Town Switchyard “Old control panels are going to be replaced with modern digital control panels. On the 33kV side we are changing some equipment too like circuit breakers, isolators and some current transformers as well.”
The Acting Assistant General Manager of Port Harcourt Sub Region, Engr. Godwin Nwagboso affirmed the expansion and rehabilitation projects going on in his area of coverage. “It’s not quite long we energized a 125MVA power transformer at Port Harcourt Main. Meanwhile arrangements are ongoing for the reconductoring of Port Harcourt Main to this Port Harcourt Town line and AfamIPP-Port Harcourt line. Also, the ancillary equipment on the 33kV side would all be changed,” he said.
