The Vice President, Sen. Kashim Shettima on Monday, 26th February, 2024 launched the light up South East initiative to accelerate power supply to industrial and clustered areas in the South East geopolitical zone.
The project which was organized by Niger Delta Power Holding Company Limited (NDPHC) in collaboration with its partners attracted key stakeholders in the nation's power sector.
Speaking, the Vice President said that the journey of the light up programme is a transformative one that will lead
to industrial expansion of Nigeria. “our gathering here today is as a result of strategic collaboration between NDPHC and its invaluable partners which will bring new hope in distress for investors”.
Shettima commended the Governors of the South East region for their strategic collaboration and support to the federal government in its bid to improve electricity supply in the region and country at large.
Also speaking, the Minister of Power, Chief Adebayo Adelebu said that the flag off of the project will see to resolution of power supply challenges in South Eastern states.
Adebayo maintained that with the light up project initiative, infrastructural deficits that have affected the sector will be addressed to ensure steady power supply in the South Eastern states.
The Minister noted that the sector experienced difficulties in liquidity constraints which manifested in payment deficit across the various value chain including payment to gas supply and for power delivered at distribution level.
He appealed to state governments to collaborate with relevant authorities to address litigations issues around Right of Way in the South East.
Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State, on his part, said that the initiative was a new dawn in the power sector in the South East that will be critical for economic integration.
Earlier, in his address, the chairman of the NDPHC, Engr. Chiedu Ugbo, said that the Light up programme will provide an opportunity for business community forum in South East to thrive.
He added that the launching of the South East phase in collaboration with project partners will provide steady electricity supply to the South Easterners for business and economic growth.
