From Classroom to 330kV Switchyard: Sa’adatu Rimi Students Explore Kumbotso Transmission Substation

Students of the Physics Department, Sa’adatu Rimi College of Education, Kano, visited the Kumbotso 330kV Transmission Substation for a firsthand look at how electricity moves from generation to consumers across Nigeria.

The educational excursion which took place on 20 June 2026, attempted to bridge classroom theory with real-world application of electrical power transmission.

Led by their lecturers, the students toured key facilities within the substation including the switchyard and control room. Engineers at the facility explained the process of evacuating power from generating plants, stepping it up for bulk transmission, and delivering it to Distribution Companies for onward supply to homes and businesses.

Beyond operations, the students received a safety sensitisation on working around transmission facilities and electricity corridors. The session emphasised hazard awareness, right-of-way compliance, and the critical role of safety in sustaining grid reliability.

For many of the students, the visit offered more than technical knowledge. It provided context on the scale of infrastructure required to keep the national grid stable, and the career pathways available in Nigeria’s power sector.

Speaking on behalf of the students, Khadija usman Abdulqadir noted that the experience has helped them connect what they have learnt in physics in school to the infrastructure powering their communities,” another student Muhammad Abdullahi noted that the visit makes the subject more real and the opportunities more visible.

The engagement aligns with the Transmission Company of Nigeria’s commitment to public education and workforce development, as the company continues to expand and modernise the nation’s transmission network.
